Zen Gardens from Kyoto to Denver: The Photography of William Corey and Scott Dressel-Martin

This beautiful exhibition celebrates the beauty of Japanese Zen gardens through the photographic medium. The dramatic, large format photographs of the late William Corey are rich with color and composition. By capturing the spirit and beauty of the Japanese garden, his works exude a sense peace. 

William Corey devoted more than three decades of his life to photographing the gardens of Kyoto. Any photographer who approaches these gardens is faced with the very formidable task of trying to use one art form to do justice to another. If the photographer is successful, he or she must somehow convey the truth of the first medium in terms that are true to the second. This was the task that William Corey so admirably undertook in his monumental study of the gardens of Japan.

To achieve this, William might spend days looking at a garden before even bringing his equipment. He mostly used the panoramic, large format 8x20 inch banquet camera. Although challenging to use, its extremely large negative size (100 times the size of a 35mm negative) allows much more information to be captured on film—details are accentuated, the tonal scale enriched and extended, the sense of reality enhanced.

Scott Dressel-Martin, long-time Denver Botanic Gardens photographer, captures the beauty of the changing seasons in the Gardens’ Shofu-En Japanese Garden. As an accomplished and passionate photographer, he has photographed locations as far-reaching as Singapore and Spain, and as close to home as the mountain towns of Colorado. The photographs in this exhibition showcase how the “Garden of Pine and Wind” marries Colorado mountain flora with the contemplative landscaping of a traditional Japanese stroll garden.  

In a time when life seems chaotic and unsettled, this exhibition shares images of peace and tranquility.

Esta hermosa exposición celebra la belleza de los jardines zen japoneses a través de la fotografía. Las dramáticas fotografías de gran formato de William Corey (ya fallecido) son ricas en color y composición. Al capturar el espíritu y la belleza del jardín japonés, de sus obras emanan una sensación de paz.

William Corey dedicó más de tres décadas de su vida a fotografiar los jardines de Kioto. Cualquier fotógrafo que se acerque a estos jardines se enfrenta a la formidable tarea de tratar de utilizar una forma de arte para hacer justicia a otra. Si el fotógrafo tiene éxito, debe transmitir de algún modo la verdad del primer medio en términos que sean fieles al segundo. Esta fue la tarea que William Corey emprendió tan admirablemente en su monumental estudio de los jardines de Japón.

Para lograrlo, William pasó días mirando un jardín antes incluso de traer su equipo. Usó principalmente la cámara panorámica de gran formato de 8x20 pulgadas. Aunque es difícil de usar, su tamaño de negativo extremadamente grande (100 veces el tamaño de un negativo de 35 mm) permite capturar mucha más información en la película: se acentúan los detalles, se enriquece y amplía la escala tonal y se realza el sentido de la realidad.

Scott Dressel-Martin, fotógrafo veterano de los Jardines Botánicos de Denver, captura la belleza de los cambios de estación en el Jardín Japonés Shofu en esos jardines. Como fotógrafo consumado y apasionado, él ha fotografiado lugares tan lejanos como Singapur y España, y tan cercanos como los pueblos de montaña en Colorado. Las fotografías de esta exposición muestran cómo el "Jardín de pinos y viento" combina la flora de las montañas de Colorado con el paisajismo contemplativo de un jardín japonés tradicional.

En una época en la que la vida parece caótica e inestable, esta exposición comparte imágenes de paz y tranquilidad.
