Street Art Murals: From Blank Urban Walls to Works of Art

09/01/2019 - 09/29/2019

First Floor Community Gallery
September 1-29

Through the award-winning Urban Arts Fund (UAF), Denver draws locally, nationally and internationally renowned artists to transform the blank canvases of ordinary urban walls into stunning works of art. The UAF is a graffiti prevention and youth development program funded by Denver Arts & Venues which facilitates the creation of new murals in perpetually vandalized areas throughout the City and County of Denver. The program provides access to positive, creative experiences for artists and youth while transforming dilapidated areas into well-tended and active community gathering spaces. Since 2009, with the help of more than 3,500 youth and 800 community participants, the program has placed more than 300 new murals and has helped protect more than 500,000 square feet of walls from vandalism.

Mary Valdez, a Denver Public Art Program Administrator and manager of the UAF program, has commissioned local, national and international street artists since the program’s inception. “Murals offer accessibility to art and creative expression without the cost and class-based barriers associated with museums and galleries,” she says. “It has been a joy to manage these incredible mural projects and watch as Denver has become an ’outdoor gallery’ of diverse murals, created by an incredible array of artists from all cultures.”

Through the photos by Denver-based mural art photographer Peter Kowalchuk, this exhibition showcases several Denver Urban Arts Fund highlights. Kowalchuk captivates and engages audiences by featuring the beauty of this magnificent art form. Known for photographing the UAF collection as well as other street art, his more than 800 images of murals made within the City and County of Denver have been featured in several local publications. His works highlight and celebrate the UAF and other street art programs and festivals in Colorado.

Primer piso de la Galería Comunitaria
Septiembre 1-29
