áyA Con Ofrenda
McNichols Civic Center Building First Floor
June 9-15, 2023

In honor of the many lives lost, especially creative lives, during the COVID-19 pandemic, áyA Con artist Marcos Garibay has created a special ofrenda in the First Floor Community Gallery at the McNichols Civic Center Building. The pyramid altar design, on display June 8-15, is inspired by Mayan architecture and is topped with a skull inspired by the Mayan god Cizin, the Mayan god of death and earthquakes. He is the most important death god in the Mayan culture. The main ofrenda was designed by Garibay especially for áyA Con. 

In conjunction with Garibay’s ofrenda, the public is invited to bring photos and images of those they have recently lost and place them on a community altar, also in the First Floor Community Gallery.

About the Artist
Marcos Garibay is the program director of a Denver-based film production company called Tomorrow Maker Studios which creates feature films, short films, animated films and comic books.

Ofrenda de áyA Con 
Edificio “McNichols” del Centro Cívico, primer piso 
9 al 15 de junio de 2023

En honor a las muchas vidas perdidas, especialmente vidas creativas, durante la pandemia de COVID-19, el artista de áyA Con Marcos Garibay ha creado una ofrenda especial en la galería comunitaria del primer piso en el Edificio “McNichols” del Centro Cívico. El diseño del altar piramidal, que se exhibe del 8 al 15 de junio, está inspirado en la arquitectura maya e incluye en su cúspide una calavera inspirada en el dios maya Cizin, el dios maya de la muerte y los terremotos. Cizin es el dios de la muerte más importante en la cultura maya. La ofrenda principal fue diseñada por Garibay especialmente para áyA Con.

En conjunto con la ofrenda de Garibay, se invita al público a traer fotos e imágenes de seres queridos recientemente fallecidos y colocarlas en un altar comunitario, también en la Galería Comunitaria del primer piso.

Sobre el artista
Marcos Garibay es el director del programa Tomorrow Maker Studios, una productora de cine con sede en Denver que crea largometrajes, cortometrajes, películas animadas y libros de historietas.
